Abstract. Purpose:To report the incidence and risk factors for interferon-associated retinopathy in patients of chronic hepatitis C. Cases:This retrospective study was made on 106 patients who received interferon for hepatitis C in the past 5 years. The series comprised 58 males and 48 females. The age ranged from 21 to 73 years, average 54 years. Results:Retinopathy developed in 52 cases(49%). It was bilateral in 29 cases and unilateral in 23 cases. Retinopathy developed within 8 weeks of treatment in 33 cases(64%). It spontaneously healed within 8 weeks of onset in 28 cases(53%). It developed in 59% of persons over 55 years of age. The incidence was significantly higher than among persons of 54 years or under(p=0.017). Incidence of retinopathy was independent of genotype or amount of RNA for hepatitis C virus, type of interferon, adjunct use of ribavirin, hematological data, hypertension or diabetes mellitus. Conclusion:Advanced age is a major risk factor for interferon-associated retinopathy in patients of chronic hepatitis C.
