  • Look Inside

We made a prospective study in 107 chronic hepatitis C patients receiving systemic interferon treatment. The series comprised 64males and 43 females. Their ages averaged 52.9±11.7 years. Interferon was given as a single medication in 41 patients. Ribavirin was given additionally to the other 47 patients. Fundus examination was repeated every 4 weeks after start of interferon. Although subjective complaints including impaired visual acuity were consistently absent, interferon retinopathy developed in 40 patients(37%)after an average of 77 days of treatment. The incidence of retinopathy was 28%in males and 51%in females,75%in diabetics and 34%in non-diabetics,and 24%in persons below 55 years of age and 50%in those aged 55 years or over. As risk factors,we identified females(p=0.04),diabetics(p=0.002),and advanced age(p=0.05). Following factors were not significantly related to retinopathy:adjunct use of systemic ribavirin,hemoglobin,platelets,HCV-RNA,and systemic hypertension. We advocate due precaution to the above risk factors of retinopathy while planning systemic interferon therapy.
