Abstract. Purpose:To report 5 cases of cytomegalovirus(CMV)iritis and corneal endotheliitis. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 6 eyes of 5 cases who were diagnosed with CMV iritis and corneal endotheliitis in the past 7 years. The diagnosis was made after the aqueous showed positive for CMV when processed by PCR in addition to typical clinical eye findings. The series comprised 4 eyes of 3 males and 2 eyes of 2 females. The age ranged from 66 to 72 years. Results:All the cases had been diagnosed with iritis and secondary glaucoma before referred to us. Initial findings included elevated intraocular pressure in 6 eyes, keratic precipitates in 5 eyes, and coin lesion in one eye. Density of corneal endothelial cells was less than 1,500 cells/cm2 in 5 eyes. All the cases were treated by topical instillation of dexamethasone and ganciclovir, with optional intravenous or intravitreal injection of ganciclovir. All the eyes showed decrease in corneal endothelial cells after resolution. Conclusion:The present cases of CMV iritis and corneal endotheliitis showed past history of iritis and glaucoma. They showed, as characteristic features, kertitic precipitates, elevated intraocular pressure, and reduced corneal endothelial cell population.
