Purpose:To report transluminal YAG laser embolysis in three cases of retinal artery occlusion. Cases:This review was made on one eye with central and 2 eyes with branch retinal artery occlusion. All were males and were aged 69, 71 and 77 years respectively. The interval between onset and treatment ranged from 6 hours to 4 days. Initial visual acuity was 0.02, 0.09 and 0.1 respectively. Method:Pulsed YAG laser was aimed at the embolus through a 3-mirror lens and was repeated from 3 to 24 shots. The output ranged from 1.3 to 2.2 mJ. Results:No immediate reaction appeared in the fundus except slight retinal hemorrhage. One eye developed subretinal hemorrhage 4 days after treatment. Vitreous hemorrhage followed and had to be treated by vitrectomy. Visual acuity improved in 2 eyes and remained unchanged in one. Conclusion:Transluminal YAG laser embolysis promises to be an effective therapeutic modality for retinal artery occlusion.
