We evaluated the efficacy of levofloxacin, cefmenoxime and tobramycin prior to cataract surgery in 234 eyes of 204 patients. Patients received either of the preparations as ophthalmic solution 5 times daily for one to three days. Control eyes received septic saline solution. Instillation of levofloxacin for 2 or 3 days, and cefmenoxime for 1, 2 or 3 days induced asepsis in 70% of eyes. Tobramycin induced asepsis at a lower rate. Asepsis at the rate of 50% was obtained by instilling any of the 3 preparations for 2 consecutive days. Saline solution induced asepsis in 29.2% of eyes. It is concluded that instillation for at least 2 days is necessary to induce asepsis in the conjunctival sac.
