Abstract. Purpose:To report 2 cases of ocular infection by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)long after retinal buckling procedure for retinal detachment. Cases:One was a 72-year-old female and the other was a 78-year-old male. They had received successful scleral encircling for retinal detachment 13 and 19 years before respectively. They sought medical advice anew for conjunctival hyperemia, chemosis, ocular discharge and ocular pain. Both cases showed endophthalmitis. Computerized tomography(CT)showed abscess adjacent to the scleral buckle. Findings:Both cases received removal of buckling material followed by uneventful course. Conclusion:CT was useful to detect scleral abscess adjacent to the scleral buckle. Although the causes are not clear, both cases show that late infection by MRSA may occur after successful buckling procedure for retinal detachment.
