Abstract. Purpose:To identify prognostic factors for the outcome of vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 64 eyes of 55 cases who received vitrectomy for diabetic retinopathy. The series comprised 47 male eyes and 17 female eyes. The age ranged from 24 to 84 years, average 56 years. Simultaneously, 40 eyes received phacoemulsification-aspiration, 37 eyes received intraocular lens implantation, 22 eyes received gas tamponade, and 56 eyes received intraocular photocoagulation. Visual outcome was evaluated 6 months after surgery. Results:Visual acuity of 0.5 or over was present in 2 eyes(3%)before and in 22 eyes(34%)after surgery. The difference was significant. Following preoperative factors were correlated with visual acuity of 0.5 or over after surgery:presence of posterior vitreous detachment, absence of retinal detachment, and use of insulin. Conclusion:Postoperative visual acuity of 0.5 is correlated with posterior vitreous detachment, no retinal detachment, and insulin therapy prior to surgery.
