Abstract. Purpose:To review cases of blepharoptosis treated by carbon dioxide laser and tucking of Muller muscle. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 160 eyes of blepharoptosis that received surgery during the past 5 years. The series comprised 58 male and 102 female eyes. The ages ranged from 28 to 92 years, average 68 years. Surgery proceeded as follows. After local anesthesia, carbon dioxide laser is used to incise into the eyelid and to separate the levator from Muller muscles. The Muller muscle is then tucked at two locations with 7-0 nylon thread. The skin is sutured after confirmation of surgical effect. Results:Surgery was completed in 15 to 30 minutes. There was minimum hemorrhage without use of chalazion forceps. Blepharoptosis improved in all the 160 eyes. The eyelid aperture widened by an average of 1.85mm. There was no instance of overcorrection or corneal erosion. Blepharoptosis recurred in 2 eyes. Conclusion:The present surgical procedure is safe and effective,as it is minimally invasive,it allows sufficient surgical field, and the amount of correction can be confirmed intraoperatively.
