Abstract. Purpose:To report a prophylactic measure for hypertrichosis or pigmentation in the lower eyelid that may develop after latanoprost instillation. Cases and Method:This study was made on 66 patients seen during a 3-year-period. The series comprised 14 males and 52 females. Their age ranged from 33 to 82 years, average 68 years. All had normal-tension or primary open-angle glaucoma. Fifty-nine patients had been receiving latanoprost linstillation. All the 66 patients were given latanoprost and were instructed to apply oily cream or baby oil to the lower eyelid before instillation. Patients were followed up for 2 to 17 months, average 5 months. Results:Hypertrichosis or pigmentation in the lower eyelid improved in 21 cases, remained unchanged in 44,and aggravated in one. Intraocular pressure averaged 13.7mmHg before and 13.1mmHg after use of preventive measure. Conclusion:Application of oily cream may prevent hypertrichosis or pigmentation in the lower eyelid after prolonged latanoprost instillation.
