Abstract. Cytomegalovirus(CMV)retinitis developed in 2 patients of Wegener granulomatosis receiving immunosuppressive therapy. One was a 25-year-old male with both eyes involved. The other was a 52-year-old male with unilateral involvement. The interval between the diagnosis of Wegener granulomatosis and ocular involvement was 11 years in both patients. Both cases showed retinal exudates with hemorrhages. CMV DNA was isolated from the blood and aqueous, leading to the diagnosis of CNV retinitis. The CD4/8 ratio was low in the blood, suggesting an immunosuppressive state. One case was treated by repeated vitreous injection of ganciclovir and by vitreous implant of sustained-release ganciclovir. The other was treated by intravenous and vitreous ganciclovir. Lasting remission of intraocular inflammation was achieved in both cases. These cases illustrate that CMV infection is a possibility in patients of Wegener granulomatosis, particularly when under immunosuppressive therapy.
