Abstract. We reviewed the incidence of ethambutol optic neuropathy among patients of tuberculosis treated by us during the 7 years through 2000. Optic neuropathy developed in 6 out of 129 treated patients(4.7%)during 3 years through 1996. It developed in 1 out of 237 treated patients(0.4%)during 3 years after 1998. The difference was significant(p<0.01). There was a change in the regimen of ethambutol in accordance to guideline for tuberculosis in 1996. In 1995,the average dose of ethambutol was 17.0mg/kg/day administered for 4.6 months. In 2000,the average dose of ethambutol was 13.6mg/kg/day administered for 3.8 months. The decreased dosis of ethambutol may have been the cause for the observed lesser incidence of optic neuropathy after 1997.
