  • Look Inside

We tried to identify the cause of calcification of hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens(IOL)by analyzing the aqueous humor in 11 eyes. Two eyes had diabetic retinopathy, vitrectomy and hemodialysis, and had received IOL removal for opacification. Six eyes had diabetic retinopathy, vitrectomy and IOL implantation. Three eyes were nondiabetic and had received IOL implantation. The aqueous humor was analyzed for calcium, phosphorus, and albumin. There was no significant difference in these values among the 3groups. The values for albumin and product of calcium and phosphorus were significantly higher in 8 eyes with diabetic retinopathy than 3 nondiabetic eyes. There is a possibility that calcification of IOL may be related with elevated values of albumin or the product of calcium and phosphorus in the aqueous humor.
