  • Look Inside

Hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens(IOL)had to be removed and exchanged due to opacity in 5 eyes of 5 patients. Their ages ranged from 51 to 69 years, average 62.8 years. The interval between IOL insertion and removal ranged from 12 to 25months,average 18.4months. All the patients had received panreteinal photocoagulation for diabetic retinopathy. Vitreous surgery had been performed on 2 eyes. Four patients had been under hemodialysis. The removed IOLs had granular crystals of different sizes in the optic area. Spectroanalysis showed presence of calcium and phosphorus. The findings show diabetes mellitus, vitreous surgery and dialysis as major risk factos for opacity of hydrophilic acrylic IOL.
