  • Look Inside

We performed goniocurettage as the primary surgery for glaucoma in 13 eyes. The series comprised primary open-angle glaucoma 7 eyes,normal-tension glaucoma 1 eye,and capsular glaucoma 5 eyes. All the 13 eyes received, simultaneously, cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation. The intraocular pressure(IOP)during the preoperative 6months averaged 23.0±3.8mmHg when treated by an average of 2.6±1.0medications. Forty months after surgery, glaucoma was well controlled in 12 eyes(92%). The IOP averaged 16.6±2.8mmHg when treated by an average of 0.9±0.7medications. The decrease in IOP was sigificant(p<0.01). The findings show that goniocurettage is effective, maybe through improved uveoscleral outflow. It can be performed together with cataract surgery. As a negative feature,IOP after goniocurettage lies at around 16mmHg even with adjunctive use of medication.
