  • Look Inside

We reviewed 128 eyes that received pterygium surgery in the past 77months. The series comprised 114 eyes of primary surgery and 14 eyes operated for recurrence. Primary surgery was performed by simple excision in 55 eyes, sliding conjunctival flap in 32 eyes, and conjunctival autograft transplantation in 27 eyes. Pterygium recurred in 14 eyes(25%)after an average of 141 days of simple excision,(6%)after 109 days of sliding conjunctival flap, and 2 eyes(7%)after 104 days of conjunctival autograft transplantation. There was no statistical difference in the survival rate one year after surgery among the three groups. In 14 eyes operated for recurrence, the rate of another recurrence was 60%,50%,and 33%respectively. The duration until recurrence was 32,70 and 64 days respectively. The rate of recurrence was higher in recurrent surgery group than in primary surgery group. We advocate primary pterygium surgery using conjunctival flap or autograft.
