We reviewed the outcome of surgery for pterygium involving the temporal cornea in 9 eyes of 9 patients during the foregoing 20 years. The series comprised 7 males and 2 females. The ages ranged from 38 to 78 years, average 51 years. The pterygium originated from the temporal side only in 2 eyes and from both sides in 7 eyes. All the eyes underwent simple resection with bared sclera as the initial procedure. Eight eyes received irradiation by Sr90 totalling 50Gy postoperatively. The pterygium recurred in 7 eyes (78%) . Symblepharon developed in 4 eyes (57%) as postoperative complication. The findings show that pterygium originating from the temporal side is likely to develop in males at a relatively early age, and is associated with a high incidence of recurrence and symblepharon.
