A new training program in clinical medicine started in 2004. The program is compulsory for postgraduates for the duration of two years. We made a nationwide survey regarding the role of ophthalmology in the program. A questionnaire was sent to 80 university departments of ophthalmology, which was responded by 73(91%). Training in ophthalmology was offered by all the 73 hospitals. Its duration ranged from 2 weeks to 12 months. An average of 1.9 prospective trainees included ophthalmology in the 2-year program. There were 92 new residents in 73 departments of ophthalmology in 2004. They had either finished postgraduate training or came from other specialities. After start of the new training program,23 universities(32%)lost affiliated hospitals due to lack of manpower. It was feared that ophthalmologists may decrease in number in foreseeable future.
