Purpose:To describe the clinical features of central retinal vein occlusion(CRVO)in a case of ulcerative colitis. Case:A 20-year-old female had had ulcerative colitis since 5 years before. The colitis had now regressed. She visited us for blurring in her right eye since 2 weeks. Her visual acuity was 1.5 in either eye when corrected by -13.5 diopters. Her right eye showed CRVO with optic papillitis. The visual acuity decreased to 0.2 3 months later due to cystoid macular edema(CME). She was treated by panretinal photocoagulation and systemic prednisolone. The ulcerative colitis relapsed three times during the ensuing 2 years, necesitating increase in the dosage of prednisolone. Optic disc swelling and CME eventually subsided resulting in visual acuity of 0.7. Conclusion:Papillophlebitis with CRVO can be a complication of ulcerative colitis. Increase of corticosteroid may be effective. Panretinal photocoagulation is a treatment of choice to stabilize CRVO.
