We examined the choroidal circulation in 21 eyes of 11 patients of retinitis pigmentosa by performing fluo-rescein and indocyanine green (ICG) angiography. The ages of patients ranged from 16 to 74 years, average 50.3 years. Both angiographic methods gave normal findings in the central fundus where the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) was still intact. Fluorescein angiography showed blocked background fluorescence. ICG angiography showed normal pat-tern of choroidal vessels and diffuse veil-like fluorescence originating from the dye in the choriocapillaris. In the mid-peripheral fundus area showing RPE atrophy, fluorescein showed attenuated choroidal vessels and decreased back-ground fluorescence. ICG showed attenuated choroidal vessels and absence of diffuse veil-like fluorescence. In the transitional zone, fluorescein showed hyperfluorescence. ICG showed patent diffuse veil-like fluorescence. The find-ings show that the circulation in the choriocapillaris reflects the state of overlying RPE.
