Purpose:To evaluate the long-term outcome after photocoagulation for Coats disease in infants and children. Cases and Method:The series comprised 7 eyes of 7 cases of Coats disease, including 5 males and 2 females. Their ages ranged from 2 years 6 months to 11 years 5 months(average:6 years 11 months). They were followed up for 10 to 26 years(average:17 years)after initial treatment by xenon or argon laser photocoagulation. Findings:Exudative lesions resolved in all the 7 eyes but recurred in 5 eyes. Additional photocoagulation had to be performed in 3 eyes. Final visual acuity was 1.0 or over in 5 eyes. Submacular fibrosis developed in the other 2 eyes without exudative retinal detachment. Conclusion:Photocoagulation was effective for infantile Coats disease. Long term follow up is necessary because of recurrence of retinal vascular lesions.
