Introduction
Vast improvements in the health of mothers and infants have been achieved throughout the world during the last decade, but hundreds of millions are still suffering from mostly preventable diseases and condi-tions. Maternal and perinatal mortality rates and levels of ill-health remain unacceptably high.
As an essential and probably the most important element of primary health care, the development of family-oriented maternal and child health care is one of the greatest challenges to all countries of the world in achieving the goal of health for all by the year 2,000.
