  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The incidence of nausea and vomiting during operation is dependent to some extent on the nature of anesthetic given, method of operation, physical condition or autonomous nervous tension of the patients. Regardless of such factors "Travelmin", diphenhydramine-hydro-chloride, 8-chlorotheophyllin (manufactured by Nihon Eizai Co., Ltd.) was used for the treat-ment of nausea and vomiting during operation.

Method: Two "Travelmin " tablets containing 55mg of its essential substance per tablet were given to each of the 25 gynecological patients undergoing laparotomy 30 minutes before spinal anesthesia, and those who had nausea and vomiting there were subcutaneously injected with "Travelmin" containing 55mg of its essential substance in 1cc.

The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The administration of two tablets of "Travelmin " immediately before operation followed by its subcutaneous injection during operation was effective in 96 per cent in controlling nausea and vomiting.

2. No undesirable side effect was observed before, during and after operation.

3. 70 per cent of the twenty healthy women (nurses) who were each given two tablets of "Travelmin " became sleepy after 30-60 minutes--a fact which is suggesting from another point of view the desirability of its clinical use prior to a laparotomy.
