Background:Patients with the vascular type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) are at high risk of serious complications, including massive bleeding, and are often seen in orthopaedic clinics for congenital clubfoot or developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Methods:In this study we retrospectively reviewed the characteristics of 5 patients with EDS in whom the possibility of the vascular type was reconsidered.

Outcome:The vascular type of EDS could not be ruled out in 3 cases, including in a sudden-death case as a result of aortic rupture.

Conclusion:The simultaneous presence of congenital clubfoot and developmental dysplasia of the hip was considered to be a critical factor in the detection of the vascular type of EDS in this series.
