Background:I measured both hip abduction angle to hold upper leg abduction against gravity and pelvic tilt angle in the presence and absence of pelvic fixation in lateral position.
Subjects and Methods:The hip abduction angle and pelvic tilt angle of 87 healthy adults (20 males and 67 females) were measured with a goniometer in the presence and absence of pelvic fixation.
Results:The mean abduction angle of both the males and the females was approximately 30 degrees, and there was no significant difference in between the groups according to whether the pelvis was fixed. The mean pelvic tilt angle of the males was 7.7 degrees with pelvic fixation and 8.2 degrees without pelvic fixation and the difference was not significant. By contrast, the mean pelvic tilt angle of the females was 9.5 degrees with pelvic fixation and 11.4 degrees without pelvic fixation, and it was significantly larger without pelvic fixation.
Conclusion:When performing manual muscle testing of grade-III abductors, examiner should examine the strength of the hip abductor in the presence of pelvic fixation, particularly in females, as well as to range of motion.
