  • Look Inside

A series of more than 1000 cases of parkhinsonism has been examined with active movement of con-tralateral limbs, which is a simple and revealing method to elicit or exaggerate parkinsonian rigidity. Clinical and electromyographical observations of this agumentation had been reported previously.

It was reported, subsequently, in this paper that the method for clinical examination with this mani-pulation would seem to yield relatively reliable value as well as reveal the variability of the rigidity in cach patient. Furthermore, the clinica experiences showed following interesting facts.

Only several cases were diagnosed as a hemiparkin-sonism out of more than 1000 cases. It can be safelv said, therefore, that a real hemiparkinsonism may be rare, even in the early stage of the disease. All patients, who could not perform the contralaterai movement of their legs, had symptoms of difflculty in starting to walk, such as festination or freezing of legs in their history. Bradykinetic patients, who had a severe latent rigidity detected only with this manoeuvre, were improved markedly after thalamec-tomy.
