  • Look Inside

Employing thin layer polyacrylamide gel electro-phoresis, the isozyme pattern of lactate dehydro-genase (LDH) of the cerebrum was examined in guinea-pigs weighing about 400 gr, which had re-ceived subcutaneous administration of 10 mg metha-mphetamine perekg of body weight daily for 10 days and were sacrificed 48 hours after receiving the last administration.

In control untreated animals, there was difference in profile of LDH isozyme pattern between the cerebral cortex and white matter, as indicated by LDH-H/LDH-M ratio. The white matter showed higher ratio than the cortex. In test animals, LDH-H/LDH-M ratio in the white was signifi-cantly lower than that of the control, through the decrease of LDH-H and increase of LDH-M, while cortical profile showed no significant difference from that of the control under the present experi-mental conditions.

Although an unequivocal conclusion on the mechanism responsible for these phenomena awaits further detailed investigation, the present findings obtained under the limited experimental conditions well suggest that the white matter may also play some role in methamphetamine intoxication as in case of grey matter or neuron that had been well documented from the biochemical and morpholo-gical aspect.
