  • Look Inside

Among the roentgenological signs of increased intracranial pressure, erosion of the planum sphe-noidale is one which is apt to be overlooked.

The authors reexamined the plain skull films of 330 patients with intracranial tumor and found oneor more roentgenological significances suggesting increased intracranial pressure in 137 cases. Erosion of the planum sphenoidale was revealed in 8 cases which were distributed in (and near) 12 year of age. The clinical courses in these cases were relatively long and the causing intracranial lesions were situ-ated mostly in the midline. Seven cases of them showed a dilatation of the ventricular system in PEG, suggesting a long lasting effect of pressure of the dilated third ventricle to the erosion of the planum sphenoidale. These evidences may lead to a com-ment that the erosion of the planum sphenoidale is an important sign of increased intracranial pressure of long duration in preadolescent patients.
