A case of Guillain-Barré syndrome associated with total external ophthalmoplegia in a 16 year-old female was presented.
She noticed diplopia and weakness of four limbs on the fifth day after the end of diarrhea.
Neurological examination on the seventh day after the onset of neurological symptoms, revealed flaccid tetraplegia, total external ophthalmoplegia, facial diplegia, dysphagia, dysarthria and bilateral weakness of tongue.
Deep reflexes were generally abolished but sensory impairments were not found anywhere.
About 2 weeks after onset, her condition began to recover gradually, and ophthalmoplegia was entirely cleared up within 40 days.
Repeated examination of CSF always showed remarkable albuminocytologic dissociation.
The titre of polio neutralizing antibody in serum was not elevated. Similar cases of literature were reviewed and discussed.
