  • Look Inside

Twenty eight schizophrenic patients with spontaneous convulsive seizures (convulsion group) following electric convulsive therapies (ECT) were studied clinically, electroence-phalographically, and statistically comparing with schizophrenic patients without seizures (control group). And the several factors correlating with the occurence and the prog-nosis of the seizures were discussed.

Results are as follows :

1) Epileptic predisposition and previous history of convulsive disorders were ruled out. Average age of onset of the psychosis was 21.6 years for the convulsion group and 24.1 for the control group, and such difference of the average age of onset was statistically significant. Average age of onset of ECT was 22.7 for the convulsion group and 29.3 for the control group, and such difference was also significant.

2) Average total number of ECT was 89.4 times for the convulsion group and 40.0 for the control group, and such difference was also significant. Average frequency of ECT was 3.34 times per month for the convulsion group and 1.84 for the control group, and such difference was also significant.
