  • Look Inside

The purpose of penicillin treatment of neurosyphilis consists in checking the development of the inflammatory process as completely as possible and keeping the nervous tissue from destruction as little as possible.

For this purpose, we have up to this time pursed our studies, thinking it is desirable to transmit the penicillin selectively to the brain tissue and the cerebrospinal fluid, and we came to the conclusion that this purpose can only be accomplished by changing the chemical construction of penicillin itself.

We have tried the Leocillin alone therapy (total dosis 1,200,000 units, and 500,000 units for one day administered intramusculary) on ten patients of general paresis and watched the follow up for a little more than one year.

We also compared this results with that obtained from malaria alone therapy and malaria-penicillin treatment.

The results showed that the Leocillin alone therapy excelled in the cell count and the colloidal reaction than malaria alone therapy, and that it was about equally as good as in the case of penicillin-malaria treatment.
