  • Look Inside

The state of development of modern neuro-surgery in Japan is briefly explained. 3,312 cases of brain tumors collected from 23 main clinics in Japan which were verified pathohis-tologically consist the background of this stu-dy. They are compared with some statistics in foreign countries. The characteristics of brain tumors in neurosurgical clinics in Japan have been particularly studied. We may say that glioma is less in Japan than that in Ame-rica and Europe, while meningioma shows about the same incidence. The number of pituitary adenoma, congenital tumor, especial-ly craniopharyngioma, is found more in the order, when tuberculoma is gradually decreas-ing. In gliomas, pinealoma is found more than that in America and Europe. The same ten-dency can be said about ependymoma. Intere-sting to say, ependymoma in Japan is found more in the supratentorial region in adult than that in foreign countries. We think, it is pe-culiar that glioblastoma multiforme in Japan is fairly less, but in the infratentorial region is considerably more than in foreign coun-tries. Astrocytoma is slightly less than that in America and Europe.
