  • Look Inside

This is a case of a 15-years-old male stu-dent who was clinically diagnosed "Pinealo-ma". He complained suddenly of headache and diplopia, and was admitted into the de-partment of surgery of Keio Univ. in Oct., 1955. Pneumoventriculography revealed a tumor which was situated between the third and the right lateral ventricules. Torkildsen's operation was performed, because the tumor was too large to be removed. He died on 26 th Feb., 1956.

At autopsy (Keio Univ. 4585), the tumor measured 10×9×7cm, weighed 320gm and sharply demarcated. Its surface and cut surface were nodular and yellowish gray partially dark purple. Its consistence was a little harder than brain. This tumor was found in the brain, and then diencephalon and mesencephalon were destroyed and not found. In other organs, there were conge-stion and edema in lungs, but no metastasis.

Microscopically the tumor tissue had many kapillaries, and consisted of the cells of three types. The cells of the first type were spin-dle-shaped with a tendency to form bundles. The cells of the second type which had round or oval nuclei were disorderly arranged and their processes showed the fusion.
