  • Look Inside

In the present report are presented the results of chlorpromazine therapy tried on 121 patients admitted in our neuropsychiatric clinic for the treatment of mental diseases from March 1955 to May 1956.

For the treatment of schizophrenic patien-ts, we found that total doses of more than 5000mg of chlorpromazine, the duration of its use ranging from 30 to 60 days, and the daily maeximum dosage of over 200mg were quite effetive and that the shorter the dura-tion of the illness, the more effective would be the results and even in the cases with the duration of over five years it was fairly effective. It was also found that this therapy proved to be most marked on the catatonic form while it gave fairly good results on the paranoid form. In addition, it appears that the better results will be obtained when this therapy is conducted concurrently with other appropriate treatment. In the patients other than schizophrenics, this therapy was most effective on the patients with psychogenous reactions.

As for the side-effects with an exception of a slight jaundice, we found none that showed any marked changes.
