  • Look Inside

Present illness:Since November 1952, he has been taking Brovarin for sleeplessness and soon had to take about 10 tablets every night. In June 1954, slight disturbance of gait appeared. On September 23, 1954, he took about 100 tablets of Brovarin and fell into a comatous state. After 5 days he re-gained his consciousness but noticed that his limbs were severely paralyzed. His conidtionwas improving slowly, so he was admitted in our clinic on June 3, 1955. On admission, the patient could neither stand nor walk if he did not grasp something or was not su-pported by some one. His gait was spastic and showed distinct ataxia of cerebellar ori-gin.

X-ray findings: Roentgenography of the spine and spinal cord was negative.

Electromyography revealed no special fin-dings.

Considering the beginning and course of this case, the spinal paralysis with cere-bellar ataxia due to the poisoning by Bro-varin would be the most adequate diagnosis. It may be concluded that the occurrence of this condition has a close connection with the continuous use of Brovarin for a long period of the time.
