  • Look Inside

The pathologic anatomical Studies have been made on the brains of about 800 cases and the followings are the results obtained from sta-tistical standpoint.

1) As shown in table I, the weight of the persons over 60 years of age tends to decrease gradually corresponding to the ages, though this is not a distinct phenomen.

2) The observation of the cerebral arteries revealed that there was a significant defference in the degree of arteriosclerosis between sixty agers and seventy agers and no significant one between seventy agers and eighty agers.

3) The degree of the cerebral arteriosclerosis is in parallel with those of the aortic and coronary sclerosis.

4) Noticeable lesions were found in 352 cases (43 per cent of 818 cases). Of these, there were 326 non-hemorrhagic softenings, 118 hemorrha-ges, 55 hemorrhagic softenings and 30 Etat lacunaire or Etat cribre. The frequency of lesions according to their localization is as follows. 204 cases in or near striatum, 71 cases in cerebral cortex, 60 cases in thalamus, 51 cases in internal capsule, 40 cases in pons, 36 cases in white matter of cerebrum and 67 cases in the other places.

5) The decrease of the weight of the brains has a close correlation to the cerebral arteri-osclerosis. And in cases with moderately adv-anced cerebral arteriosclerosis, the decrease of the weight of the brain of the persons with hypertension was found sligoter than that of others. However, in cases with relatively slight cerebral arteriosclerosis, there was no relatio-nship between the hypertension and the decr-ease of the weight of the brains.
