  • Look Inside

At present it is generally accepted that a fetal erythroblastosis followed by an encephalopathia posticterica infantum which develops extrapyramidal motor symptoms. Fetal erythroblastosis is due to the isoimmunization of mother and fetus. Few cases of encephalopathia posticterica infantum have been reported in Japan, because there are fewer Rh-negative among the Japanese than among the white.

The patient, 18 old male, is the 2nd child of an Rh-positive father and an Rh-negative mother. He is Rh-positive. His elder sister has enjoyed good health. But his other 5 siblings were dead either from stillbirth, or from icterus neonatorum gravis. He had slight jaundice at birth. At l year of age he began to develop typical extrapyramidal motor symptoms. At present he has muscular dystonia, disturbance of coordination, and athetotic movement. He is normal in intelligence.

Recently it has been assumed that encephalopathia posticterica infantum may be rather due to an impaired oxidation in the embryonal brain tissues than to post-partum jaundice of nucleus. This case report seems to support the above menthined hypothesis, because this patient had only slight jaundice at birth.
