  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

1) After epileptic seizures were induced to genuine epileptics by giving water, performing hyperventilation, administering sodium bicarb-onate, and PEG, measurement of pH and total plasma carbonate in arterial blood was done. Epileptic seizures occurred chiefly when the arterial blood changed to metabolic or respira-tory alkalosis. It seems that the change of PH in the arterial blood is a factor for the caase of the seizure.

2) The relationship of the changes of the PH in arterial blood and the total plasma car-bonate and the occurrence of seizure under va-rious injections of acidic and alkaline solutions in rabbits, dogs and cats were studied. Epile-ptic seizures only occurred when fatal acid-ba-se unbalance was induced.

3) The changes of pH of femoral artery and total plasma carbonate during the induction of epileptic seizure by cardiazol injection in dogs were studied. After the injection, the pH bec-ame slightly acidic before the seizure appear-ed while the total plasma carbonate scarcely changed, It seems that this change is second-ary in nature.

4) Alumina cream was injected into the sp-inal canal of rabbits to induce epileptic seizu-res. Thence, the pH of arterial blood, total plasma carbonate and EEG were studied.

After the injection, the change of pH of arter-ial blood became greater day by day and also acidic. During this process, epileptic seizures occurred. After the injection, total plasma carbonate slightly decreased before the appea-rance of the seizure. However, no definite curve was shown after the seizure. After the injection, the predisposition to seizure was dem-onstrated by the EEG. The change of pH in the arterial blood and total plasma carbonate in rabbits prior to the seizure, seemed to have some relationship with the predisposition to seizure.

5) After epileptic seizures were induced by cardiazol injection in cats, the changes of pH in cerebral cortex and cerebral blood flow were studied. After the injection, pH of cerebral cortex rised slightly just before the seizure and lowered right after the seizure. After injection, cerebral blood flow showed little cha-nge before the seizure, rised right after the seizure and continued the rise for a while.

It seems that the changes of the pH in the cerebral cortex just before the seizure, directly reacts to the discharge of the cortical activity prior to the change of cerebral blood flow.
