On occasion-occasions which are all too rare-there appears on the human horizon a man of intelligence who is devoted to the welfare of his fellow men. Such a man is Dr. Percival Bailey. His entire life has been devoted to scientific investigation, the advancement of medicine, the relief of human suffering, the instruction of medical students and the training of these interested predominantly in the fields of Neurology. His time and energies have always been freely given without thought as to the race, color or creed of those he has assisted. He has been the living exemplification of the ideal that science knows no political boundaries. Dr. Bailey's freedom from racial or nationalistic prejudicies is amply illustrated by the fact that today his former pupils advance his teachings, his ideals, and emulate his example in the Orient, in Europe, and in Latin America, as well as in North America. Recently he was honored by a scientific meeting and dinner in Chicago on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. Friends and pupils from many countries attended and at the dinner the leading profes—sors of neurology of France and Germany, Prof. Alajouanine of Paris and Prof. Schaltenbrand of Würzburg, paid tribute to his accomplishments.
Dr. Bailey was born and raised in Southern Illinois. He was educated at the Southern Illinois University, the University of Chicago, and Northwestern University. His specialized training in neurology, neurological surgery and neuropathology was had at the clinic of Dr. Harvey Cushing in Boston, the clinics of Pierre Marie and Henri Claude in Paris and on the wards and in the laboratories of Dr. George B. Hassin in Chicago. At various times he also studied and worked with Dr. Otfrid Foerster in Breslau, Germany, his old friend, Dr. Frederic Bremer in Brussels, Belgium and with Dr. Dusser de Barenne at Yale University. He has been granted the degrees of Bachel—or of Science and Doctor of Philosophy by the University of Chicago, Doctor of Medicine by Northwestern University, and Docteur honoris causa by the University of Paris. This summer his first alma mater, Southern Illinois University is conferr—ing an honorary degree upon him. Dr. Bailey is also an honorary member of many societies, including those in Esthonia, Belgium, Italy and Spain. He has been president of svcral neurological and neuro-surg cal organizations in the United States. For eleven years he was Professor of Surgery (Neurological Surgery) at the University of Chicago (1928-1939).
