In September 2013, eight members of Kokura Friday Club visited three psychiatric facilities in Seoul. Our guide was Dr. Lee Ho Young, former chancellor of Ajou University and former chairman of the department of psychiatry, Yonsei University School of Medicine. We visited the following institutions:1)“Kwangwha Our Village,” founded by Bishop Kim Sung Soo (former president of Sung Kong Hoe University) which houses mentally retarded/autistic persons and provides them with employment in a beansprout factory;2) “Mind and Mind Clinic,” owned by Dr. Kim Joon Ki, where marital therapy and post-trauma therapy are practiced with psychotherapy and EMDR techniques;and 3) the Department of Psychiatry of Samsung Medical Center. The Medical Center has 2,000 beds and receives 8,000-9,000 outpatients daily. The psychiatric service has four sections:general psychiatry, child psychiatry, specialized psychiatry (depression, oncopsychiatry, etc.) and a day-care center. The funeral facility affiliated with the hospital is well equipped and very active. In the early part of the paper, the authors provide a brief history of Korean psychiatry since 19th century.
