We conducted a survey to study the side effects in psychiatric outpatients of our university hospital.

Previous surveys have focused only on the subjective side effects in patients. We suspected that there is a discrepancy in the assessment of side effects made by patients and that by doctors. Therefore, we compared the assessments to determine the possible difference.

Psychiatric outpatients receiving antipsychotics in our hospital were enrolled in this study, and 132 patients answered the self-reported questionnaire that we developed. In addition, the attending physicians answered the questionnaire at the same time.

The differences in the assessments made by patients and doctors were observed in the following items of the questionnaire:“dry mouth”, “body-weight gain”, “daytime sleepiness”, “dizziness”, and “lightheadedness”.

Our study shows that these side effects reported after assessment by patients could be more severe than those reported by doctors.
