A community study was conducted to determine the prevalence of DSM-Ⅳ major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, and minor depressive disorder among Japanese adolescents aged 12 to 14 years. Diagnoses were based on the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for Children, which was administered to 328 adolescents. The overall current and lifetime prevalence of all depressive disorders were 4.9% (2.2% for boys and 8.0% for girls) and 8.8% (6.2% for boys and 12.0% for girls), respectively. Rates of suicidal ideations and attempts were higher for the currently depressed (31.3% and 18.8%) than the nondepressed (2.6% and 1.9%) sample.
