Low rate of seeking professional help, and medication non-adherence are major obstacles to treatment effectiveness for depression in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to elucidate factors contributing to the arousal of intention to seek treatment for depression. The survey was carried out among 112 staff members in a town in Miyazaki prefecture. Participants were presented with a depression description, and asked their likelihood to seek any of nine hypothetical clinics on a 5-point scale if they experienced depression. The hypothetical clinics were varied in terms of travel time to the clinic, consultation hours, and treatment type. Results revealed that (a) participants thought treatment type was more important than travel time to clinic and consultation hours, (b) participants did not prefer medication as compared to psychotherapy and psychotherapy in combination with pharmacotherapy in cases where the participants were informed about the treatment options (i.e., length of consultation and cost of care), (c)about 20% of participants preferred psychotherapy and psychotherapy in combination with pharmacotherapy, and lower than 10% of participants preferred medication. The results suggest that it is important to disseminate accurate information about antidepressants and reduce the stigma about medication.
