Longitudinal study that follows the ventila-tory functions of normal and diseased subjects was presented to discuss the functional as-pects of aging and chronic lung disease.

Over an average period of 5 years obser-vations were made of 30 normal, 29 emphy-sematous and 13 fibrotic male subjects.

1) The means of the observed changes per year in the normal group were decrease of 10 ml for VC, 40 ml for FEV1.0, 1.0% for FEV1.0% and increase of 0.1 l/min for MVV, 0.4% for RV/TLC respectively.

Besides slightly greater decrease in FEV1.0 and FEV1.0%, these age changes were found to be similar to the age differences by 594 normal male individuals, ranging from 22 to 81 years of age.

2) The differences of annual ventilatory changes between the normal and the diseased group were compared.

Statistical differences (P<0.05) were found between the normal and the emphysema group for VC, IC, ERV, and between the normal and the fibrosis group for FEV1.0%.

3) The differences of annual ventilatory changes ratios between the normal and the diseased group were compared.

Statistical differences (P<0.05) were found between the normal and the emphysema group for VC, IC, FEV1.0, MVV, and not found between the normal and fibrosis group for any of the measurements.

4) During the period of the observation, the individual variations of the ventilatory functions were remarkable in the fibrotic subjects.
