1. In normal dogs, receiving infusions of sodium bicarbonate, acute hypercapnia induced by breathing 10 per cent CO2 re-sults in a significant increase in the rate of reabsorption of bicarbonate from 2.37 to 3.69mEq per 100ccGFR, bearing close relationship with the elevation of plasma bicarbonate concentration. These in-creased bicarbonate reabsorption was appa-rently higher than the maximal reabsorp-tion rate of bicarbonate in the control group breathing room air (2.5mEq/100ccGFR).
