In this study, the role of fluorescent molecular imaging in gastrointestinal endoscopy is highlighted. Molecular imaging enables the detection of neoplastic lesions that are invisible using existing endoscopic imaging modalities ; this imaging also facilitates the visualization of lesion characteristics at the cellular level, such as molecular expression, and assessment of therapeutic effect in real time. Several fluorescence molecular imaging probes have been developed ; however, none are widely used in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Thus, there is a need for developing promising molecular imaging probes, conducting clinical studies, and improving the outcomes of patients with gastrointestinal cancer using molecular endoscopy in clinical settings.
