Differentiation between intestinal-type tubular adenoma and differentiated adenocarcinoma of the stomach is sometimes difficult, and the diagnostic criteria vary among institutions. Recently, we confirmed the indolent nature of GINs(gastric intramucosal neoplasias)harboring APC mutation and discovered that initial TP53 mutation frequently occurs in non-indolent GINs. The grade of histological atypia and potential of malignant progression differed between APC-mutants and TP53-mutants. Assessing mutations in APC and TP53 as well as the histological features associated with these mutations is important for GIN subclassification.
