To clarify the clinical and pathological characteristics and prognosis of rare colorectal malignancies in the Japanese population, we investigated individual patient data between 1995 and 2004 using the JSCCR registry. The vast majority of colorectal malignancies consisted of epithelial tumors. Among them, well to moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma accounted for 91.0% ; it was followed by poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma(3.6%)and mucinous carcinoma(3.1%). Proportions of signet ring cell carcinoma, squamous and adenosquamous carcinoma, and undifferentiated carcinoma, were less than 1%. In general, these rare malignancies presented at late stages, and their prognoses were poorer than the common histologic types.
