  • Look Inside

The present study is centered on the endoscopic pictures of polyposis of the digestive tract with some reference to the literature. One of the merits of endoscopic examination in gastrointestinal polyposis is that those changes not only of the polyps themselves but their adjoining areas such as edema, reddening, erosion, tendency to bleed easily and outright hemorrhage can be observed at first hand. Furthermore, its greatest merit lies in the fact that we can study the polyps histologically. We are now in this way in a position to histologically determine to what type a given polyposis belongs before arriving at the principle of treatment. Endoscopic polypectomy that has been employed in recent times can also be a great help in the detection of focal carcinoma.

Not uncommonly polyposis in a segment of the digestive tract is accompanied with another one in other segments, so that careful search for such a change all through the digestive tract is imperative.

The area of one polyposis can overlap that of another polyposis within the digestive tract. It is therefore very desirable to standardize diagnostic criteria for polyposis of each segment of the digestive tract. More accurate diagnosis and more pertinent treatment should be made on the basis of them. Further collection of gastrointestinal polyposis should lead to elucidation of its pathological physiology and hereditary transmission.
