It is well known that characteristic in the development of Scirrhous cancer of the stomach is rapid fiber formation in the stomach wall.

The presence of edematous region of the wall was noticed in the vicinity of scirrhous lesion and/or prior to the fiber formation of the Scirrhous cancer. This study revealed that edematous region has cancerous cells and almost same amount of collagen as scirrhous region, suggesting that rapid fiber formation is caused by changing from soluble collagen to insoluble collagen.

Stomach wall has considerable amount of protocollagen hydroxylase which is key enzyme of the collagen biosynthesis requiring ferrous iron, α-ketoglutarate and ascorbic acid.

Autoradiographic technique using 3H-proline revealed that cancerous cells in the scirrhous tissue of the stomach might be involved in the biosynthesis of collagen which is related to the fiber formation of the stomach wall.

We might say that scirrhous cancer of the stomach has characteristics of collagen producing carcinoma.
