  • Look Inside

In 1962 macroscopic classification of early gastric cancer was decided on in Japan. Before the settlement of this classification there were many arguments and discussions between radiologists, endoscopists, surgeons and pathologists. However, this classification has been accepted widely in the last 40 years based on the following reasons : 1) The classification is simple,2) It is composed without reference to histogenesis and histologic classification of cancer,3) It is simply based on the mucosal configuration of depression and elevation.

Considering these principles behind the classification of early gastric cancer, the classification in Japan of early colorectal cancer also might be best settled simply with reference only to mucosal configuration.
